Getting Back to the Fundamentals
Jim Sziksai

Having been a basketball coach for 28 years, I can say without hesitation that the most important aspect of coaching was the teaching of the fundamentals.  Understanding the fundamentals and being able to execute them gave my teams CONFIDENCE, especially when the games got close and the pressure was on.  Relying on the fundamentals were the keys to sucessful seasons.

Likewise, the fundamentals in school are the 3 R's.  The ablitlity to use the 3 R's properly gives people the CONFIDENCE to compete in today's society and to be successful.  Show me someone who cannot read, write and compute simple mathematical calculations and I will show you someone who will struggle in life.

The fundamentals on which America, the greatest nation on earth, was founded, are embodied in the Constitution of the United States.  Our forefathers were brillian men who understood mankind and developed a set of fundamentals that would take into account the character of men and how best to use them to govern.  Understanding thd living by the fundamentals of the Constitution gives all of us CONFIDENCE, especially when tough times are upon us.

As a Christian in a Christian nation, what gives me CONFIDENCE is practicing the fundamentals of my faith.  Knowing that the Bible is the inspired, inerrant Word of God gives me CONFIDENCE in believing what the Bible says is true.  Praying to the God who created our universe and knowing that HE hears me and intervenes on my behalf gives me CONFIDENCE in living in today's world.  Knowing that Jesus Christ died for my sins because of simple belief gives me CONFIDENCE of my eternal destiny.  Embracing the practicing solid fundamentals are the anchors that help me live a CONFIDENT life.

Jim Sziksai is the retired Director of Athletics and Basketball Coach of A.C Reynolds High School.  His 1988 Boys' Basketball Team won the 4-A State Championshsip.
